| Sustainability | Environmentally intensive extraction | Potential for more sustainable sourcing |
| Architecture | Primarily von Neumann | Enables novel architectures (neuromorphic, quantum) |
| Durability | Susceptible to harsh environments | Can be more resistant to extreme conditions |

> **EXPERT TIP:** The key to Mineral AI's success lies in carefully selecting and processing minerals to optimize their desired properties for specific AI applications.

## Current Applications and Research in Mineral AI (2025)

While still in its early stages, Mineral AI is already showing promise in various applications. Here are some notable examples:

* **Neuromorphic Computing:** Researchers are exploring the use of memristors made from metal oxides (like titanium dioxide) to create neuromorphic chips that mimic the human brain's neural networks. These chips can perform pattern recognition and learning tasks with significantly lower energy consumption compared to traditional silicon-based processors. A 2024 study by MIT demonstrated a neuromorphic chip using perovskite minerals that achieved a 10x reduction in energy consumption compared to a similar silicon-based chip.
* **Optical Computing:** Minerals with unique optical properties are being used to develop optical computers that use light instead of electricity to perform computations. This can lead to significantly faster processing speeds and lower energy consumption. Researchers at Stanford University have developed an optical modulator using lithium niobate that can switch light signals at terahertz speeds.
* **Quantum Computing:** Certain minerals, such as diamond with nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers, are being explored as qubits for quantum computers. Qubits are the fundamental building blocks of quantum computers, and diamond NV centers offer excellent coherence times, which are crucial for performing complex quantum calculations.
* **Sustainable Electronics:** Researchers are investigating the use of earth-abundant minerals like copper sulfides and iron oxides to create sustainable electronic components. These minerals are less toxic and more readily available than some of the rare earth elements used in traditional electronics.
