The gig economy, once hailed as the future of work, has revealed a stark reality: precarious employment, exploitative practices, and a widening wealth gap. But a powerful alternative is emerging, gaining momentum and poised for significant growth in the next decade: platform cooperativism. This article provides a definitive guide to understanding the evolution of platform cooperatives, exploring their potential, challenges, and the exciting future they hold. By 2035, we might look back at 2025 as the year platform cooperativism truly took off.

## What is Platform Cooperativism?

Platform cooperativism is a business model that combines the power of digital platforms with the principles of worker ownership and democratic governance. Unlike traditional platforms dominated by venture capital and prioritizing shareholder profits, platform cooperatives prioritize the needs of their workers, users, and communities. They are structured as cooperatives, meaning their members (workers, users, or both) collectively own and control the platform, sharing profits and decision-making power. ![A diverse group of people collaborating on a digital platform](https://images.unsplash.com/photo-1690226613377-aa7c2facb58d?q=85&w=1200&fit=max&fm=webp&auto=compress)
