Optical AI, also known as photonic AI or AI in optics, represents a paradigm shift in artificial intelligence. Instead of relying on traditional electronic circuits to process information, optical AI leverages photons – particles of light – to perform computations. This fundamental change in hardware offers several advantages, including significantly faster processing speeds, lower energy consumption, and inherent parallelism.

At its core, optical AI involves building artificial neural networks (ANNs) using optical components. These components include lasers, waveguides, modulators, and detectors, all meticulously designed to manipulate and process light signals in a manner analogous to neurons and synapses in a biological brain. The input data is encoded into light signals, which then propagate through the optical network, undergoing transformations that mimic the learning process of a neural network. The output is then detected and converted back into an electronic signal for further processing or decision-making.
