## Types of Orbital Habitats: From Spheres to Cylinders and Beyond

Orbital habitat designs vary significantly, each with its own advantages and disadvantages. The most common concepts include:

* **Stanford Torus:** A toroidal (doughnut-shaped) habitat that rotates to create artificial gravity. This design is iconic and offers a large habitable area.
* **O'Neill Cylinder:** Two counter-rotating cylinders that provide artificial gravity through centrifugal force. This design offers even larger habitable areas than the Stanford Torus.
* **Bernal Sphere:** A spherical habitat that rotates to create artificial gravity. This design is relatively simple to construct and offers good radiation shielding.
* **Kalpana One:** A smaller, more modular design based on the O'Neill Cylinder concept, designed for initial colonization efforts.

Here's a simple comparison table:

| Habitat Type | Shape | Artificial Gravity | Habitable Area | Complexity |
|-------------------|----------------|--------------------|-----------------|------------|
| Stanford Torus | Toroid | Rotation | Large | Moderate |
| O'Neill Cylinder | Cylinder | Rotation | Very Large | High |
| Bernal Sphere | Sphere | Rotation | Moderate | Low |
| Kalpana One | Cylinder | Rotation | Smaller | Moderate |

Each design presents unique engineering challenges related to structural integrity, radiation shielding, and life support systems.
