## What is Ecosystem-Based Technology?

Ecosystem-based technology, also known as nature-based solutions tech, encompasses a wide range of technological innovations designed to work *with* natural ecosystems to address environmental challenges and provide societal benefits. It's a departure from traditional engineering approaches that often rely on concrete and steel, instead focusing on leveraging the inherent capabilities of ecosystems – their ability to regulate water cycles, sequester carbon, purify air, and provide habitat – to achieve sustainable outcomes. This includes technology for ecological restoration and the development of sustainable technology solutions.

At its core, ecosystem-based tech recognizes the immense value of ecosystem services – the myriad benefits that humans derive from healthy ecosystems. These services are often undervalued or overlooked, leading to environmental degradation. Ecosystem-based tech aims to quantify and capitalize on these services, creating economic incentives for their protection and restoration.

Consider a coastal wetland, for instance. Not only does it provide habitat for numerous species, but it also acts as a natural buffer against storm surges, filters pollutants from runoff, and sequesters carbon. Ecosystem-based tech solutions might involve using drones to monitor wetland health, deploying sensors to track water quality, or implementing data analytics to optimize restoration efforts. The goal is to enhance the wetland's ability to provide these crucial services, benefiting both the environment and the surrounding communities.
