Consider the following examples:

* **Cosmological Simulations:** These simulations attempt to recreate the evolution of the universe from its earliest moments to the present day. They require modeling the gravitational interactions of countless particles, the formation of galaxies and stars, and the influence of dark matter and dark energy.
* **Astronomical Data Analysis:** Modern telescopes, such as the upcoming Extremely Large Telescope (ELT) and the Square Kilometre Array (SKA), will generate petabytes of data *per day*. Analyzing this data to identify new astronomical objects, study the properties of distant galaxies, and search for signs of extraterrestrial life requires massive computational resources.
* **Astrophysical Fluid Dynamics:** Simulating the behavior of plasmas in stars and black hole accretion disks requires solving complex equations on incredibly fine grids. These simulations are crucial for understanding the processes that drive stellar evolution and the formation of black holes.

These are just a few examples of the types of problems that fall under the umbrella of universe-scale processing. The common thread is the need for immense computational power, sophisticated algorithms, and innovative data management techniques.
